is back near the tail. Hisnostrils unite in a single tube upon the upper mandible ofthe bill, and he is web-footed like all sea birds. MotherCareys chickens, as the sailors call these birds, arefound in every latitude all over the globe. They almostseem to have sprung out of the ocean ; for in the stormor the calm alike, they are seen skimming over thewaves in quest of food many hundred miles from land. The Mother Careys chicken, was formerly re-garded with superstitious fancies by the mariner. Theappearance of these birds in great numbers, was supposedto be indicative of the coming storm, and while theirpresence was a bad omen and to be deprecated, thewarning was received with a becoming reverence. Toshoot one of them would doom the rash oflender to diremisfortune. The petrel, therefore, was held sacredin the creed of the prudent voyager. up and down!
