Rare glimpse into the mouth of a C-5 Charlie military transport plane, the largest cargo plane in the U.S. fleet, which was designed to carry tanks, just before STTARS (the Space Telescope Transporter for Air Road and Sea) was loaded for transport from Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, to Houston. STTARS was carrying the pathfinder (or test) backplane of the James Webb Space Telescope, which was headed to NASA Johnson for cryogenic tests. This backplane, which is like the spine of the telescope and supports the mirrors and instrument module, has two test primary mirrors and a test secondary mirror mounted to it.
