Title
Impression of medieval vessica seal matrix
Description
English: A medieval seal matrix of lead, dating to the 13th or 14th century.

The seal has a lentoid 'vessica' form. On the reverse is a longitudinal raised rib, approximately 2mm wide, running down the median. It is likely that this rib would have originally borne a pierced lug for suspension.

The die of the seal has been engraved. The central motif is a fleur-de-lis within lentoid field. The inscription taken is unclear, but the following fragments can be discerned: ET--CHE--ACH.

The size and shape of the seal date it to the 13th century; a time when the use of personal, 'non-heraldic' seal matrices had spread to a large part of the populace of Britain.

The seal is dark grey in colour and shows little sign of wear. The seal weighs 9.2g and measures 30.6mm in length, 21.4mm in width.
