DescriptionImpact Print Elements.jpg |
Print elements for IBM Selectric typewriter and for a Canon daisy wheel printer or typewriter. The IBM "golfball" print heads were also used by the IBM 2741 hard-copy data terminal. These were from the era of impact printers. For the daisywheel design, the wheel spins rapidly, and a single hammer strikes as the appropriate letter passes the hammer position. The selectric ball itself rotates and tilts to bring the desired symbol into position and then strikes the ribbon and paper. Both elements are very lightweight plastic, yet could withstand hours of deafening, table-shaking pounding while printing under computer control. The orator font is a large font you would have used before Power Point, to make a view graph for an old-school overhead projector. Note: This was taken outdoors, with the items sitting on one of those cheap white resin chairs. No other lighting or reflectors were uses. Makes a pretty good shadowless, distraction-free background for small items. |
