Description

임진강 臨津江

I am at Imjingak Pavilion, the northernmost point on the main northbound highway and railroad out of Seoul that civilians may access without special permission. I am on a foreigners-only tour of the Panmunjom truce village, and here for a quick rest stop.

The two bridges cross the Imjin River, which is mostly in North Korea but flows in South Korea in this section; it joins the Han River from Seoul near its mouth.

The left bridge is the rail line from Seoul to Pyongyang and China. Destroyed during the Korean War, the bridge was rebuilt a few years before this photo was taken, initially restoring the rail line to Dorasan in the Demilitarized Zone. In 2007 the full restoration of the rail line to Kaesong, North Korea, would be completed.

The right bridge used to be Highway 1 to Pyongyang and China, and was never rebuilt. Instead, a modern 4-lane bridge is further off to the right, and I would use the new bridge to enter the restricted area and proceed north. My route would use the old Highway 1 to US Army's Camp Bonifas then on to Panmunjom, though traffic actually bound for North Korea uses a brand-new road via Dorasan to Kaesong Industrial Park instead.
