The next stages of the journey were devoted to sleeping asbest I could in the uncomfortable conveyance, but I awoke intime to enjoy the grand mountain scenery of the Kharzan Pass.This lofty roadway crosses the Alborz range at a height ofseven thousand feet, or more, above the Caspian, and in winterit is one of the bleakest and most desolate places in all Persia, apathway of death where many a beast of burden falls by theway.
