As a result of overfishing, and the pollu-tion of streams by factories and sewage, this fish is dis-appearing from Eastern waters. ZOOLOGY The whitefish (Coregonus1), of which we possess manyspecies, is exclusively an inhabitant of fresh water.2 Itsteeth are almost completely absent, or very small ; it feedsalmost exclusively upon small arthropods and mollusks.It is of very great commercial importance, its fisheriesbeing valued tit nearly three million dollars a year. Leaving now the Salmonidse, we may briefly considersome of the other more important families of bony fishes.
