The sufferings and heroismof that terrible march to Quebec makesad but inspiring reading. Prof. GeorgeE. Woodberry, editor of the valuable Poe-Chivers papers, which are concluded inthe February Century, finds in the cor-respondence evidence that Chivers, whothought himself a genius, was to Poe, whoreally was one, not unlike what Alcottwas to Emerson. William Gage Ervingsstorv of his ISOOmile trip from Khartumto Cairo in an Adirondack canoe is full ofexciting experiences, and tells somethingincidentally of Egyptian affairs. Nobodyassociates fires with spinsters in any pleasant way, muses Lillie Hamilton iFrench in My Old Maids Corner, buther winter night dreams over the ashesare sweet and wholesome and tenderlysympathetic.
