Illustration of the Propagation of an Ensemble (resp. density) by the flow (resp. transfer operator) of a dynamical system.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Illustration of the propagation, or transfer, of an ensemble by the flow associated with a dynamical system. A two-dimensional phase space is represented. The ensemble members are states, or points, in the phase space, represented here by the gray dots. Each ensemble member is propagated by the flow (i.e. by integrating the equations of motion), as indicated by the gray arrows.

The initial ensemble is an approximation of an initial probability density p (a function of the state-variable x), represented by the black dashed contours.

The later is propagated by the transfer operator L and the result (black plain contours) is approximated by the propagated ensemble.
