It is to him that Illinois is indebted for securing, afterrepeated efforts, the passage through congress of the actof 1827 granting to the State, without reservation, the alternatefive sections upon each side of the lllinois-and-MichiganCanal, for the purpose of aiding in its construction, amount-ing to nearly three hundred thousand acres of land, includ-ing the original site of Chicago. In part acknowledgment ofthis debt, Cook County bears his honored name. The fifth general assembly assembled December 4, 1826.William B. Archer, Zadoc Casey, and Timothy Gard had beentransferred from the house to the senate.
