Summary[edit]

Description
English: In mid-February 2017, NASA’s Terra satellite flew over Antarctica’s Weddell Sea and spotted Iceberg B09D between the clouds. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying aboard captured this true-color image on February 18.

According to the U.S. National Ice Center (NIC), Iceberg B09D measures approximately 25.3 miles (40.7) long and 7 miles (11.3 km) wide and on February 17 was located at 6 64°26'S and 44°52'W. B09D is a remnant of Iceberg B09, which initially broke off the Ross Ice Shelf in 1987. B09 has split into several pieces over the last thirty years. Six of these icebergs continue to be monitored by NIC. They are B09B, B09D, B09F, B09G, B09H, and B09I.

Icebergs names are derived from the Antarctic quadrant in which they were originally sighted. The quadrants are divided counterclockwise, and follow this order: A = 0¬- 90W (Bellingshausen/Weddell Sea) B = 90W- ¬180 (Amundsen/Eastern Ross Sea) C = 180 - ¬90E (Western Ross Sea/Wilkesland) D = 90E-¬0 (Amery/Eastern Weddell Sea). Sequential numbers are assigned to the icebergs, and numbers are assigned to those which have calved from larger icebergs. From this nomenclature it can be seen that Iceberg B09 was the 9th iceberg monitored by NIC in the Amundsen/Eastern Ross Sea. B09D was the fourth identified iceberg calved from B09.
