Mary (Bessie) Pocock had a distinguished nursing career; serving with the New South Wales Army Nursing Service Reserve during the Boer War where she was twice mentioned in dispatches before volunteering for the First World War.
During her service with the Australian Army Nursing Service she worked as a senior sister in hospitals in Cairo and Ismailia in Egypt, before taking up duty as a matron on board the Hospital Ship Assaye, which transported wounded soldiers to England. She went on to serve in France, Belgium and England. Bessie was awarded the Associate Royal Red Cross in recognition of her service and was later twice mentioned in despatches.
Following the war she continued to treat returned servicemen, working as Matron at Gladesville mental hospital, caring for war damaged soldiers and later opening a convalescence hospital in Chatswood called Ismailia. She never married and lived with her brother, sister and nieces until her death on 16 July 1946.
