| Description |
English: Memorial to the victims of the collision of the MV Summit Venture with a pier of the 1971-built southbound span of the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge on May 9, 1980 at the northern rest area along Interstate 275 south of St. Petersburg, Florida near the Pinellas-Hillsborough County Line. The freighter collided with a pier during a sudden squall, sending over 1,200 feet (370 m) of the bridge plummeting into Tampa Bay. The collision caused six cars, a truck, and a Greyhound bus to fall 150 feet (46 m) into the water, killing 35 people. |
