Description

Saint Dionysus wrote extensively on the subject of angels or bodiless powers in his book, The Celestial Hierarchy completed in the 5th century. His work, based on scripture and Church tradition, has been very influentual in the developent of Orthodox theology. He determined that there are nine ranks of angelic orders which he organized into three hierarchies. Each hierarchy has specific responsibilities and distinctive features defined by their proximity to God.

The first hierarchy, which is closest to God, consists of the Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones. The second hierarchy consists of the Powers, Dominions, and Virtues. The angels of the second hierarchy are not featured in Orthodox iconography but are described as being human-like and exceptionally beautiful with feathered wings. The third hierarchy consists of Principalities, Archangels, and Angels and are the closest to humananity.
