English: This combined visible and infrared full disk image of Hurricane Gilbert from September 13, 1988, was captured by NOAA's GOES-7 satellite. Launched in 1987 and retired in 2012, GOES-7 had the distinction of being the only satellite in the history of NOAA’s geostationary program to serve both as the GOES-East and GOES-West spacecraft in the course of normal operations. From the satellite's perch in space, you can see how enormous Gilbert was, as it moved through the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. At the time, Hurricane Gilbert was the most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin.
