hingstirred so the band came down to the water and all drank except the leaderwho stayed on watch. This was Hans chance and slowly rising to hisknees he laid his gun flat on top cf a low rock, and waited. The chamoisleader was standing head on to him. He whistled softly and the creatureturned at once to look, thus exposing its side. Bang went the gun andwhen the smoke had cleared away the band was seen running across therocks in big leaps and bounds. But the leader had fallen behind; it waswounded. An instant later it lost its footing and rolled out of sight. Hans ranto the edge of the rocks and saw the line made in the snow where the bodyhad fallen. An hour later he reached his prize which he found stone dead. All hunters and travellers bear witness to the wonderful manner inwhich the chamois makes its way over the roughest ground. It seems toliterally skim through the air. Hans said that on one accasion he slighdywounded a chamois and failed to get a second shot before it was off He
Text Appearing After Image:
IHL LNU Ul A ellVMUl^ ilLM the chamoismust e:o into HUNTING CHA:\I0IS ran after the httle creature along a ledge. At the end of the ledge was whatseemed to him a sheer precipice, and he was greatly surprised to see thechamois make its way across its face and escape. He examined the placeclosely, and admitted that it would have puzzled a mountaineer, armed withan alpine rope and ice-axe to scale the face. This was in the days whenHans was young, and inexperienced but the chamois have had lots ofchances since then to surprise him even more. The chamois seems to be able to stand almost any amount of cold andexposure, for it takes a winter of very terrible severity to drive it into thevalleys for shelter; still this does occur once in a while. When you visit Switzerland and see no chamois it is no proof that theyare not there. Tofind you ..._. ^the less frequentedmountains beforesunrise, and if youhave good luck youmay catch aglimpse of a band. Chamois lo\xtheir young one-very dearly anew
