The women and girls, whosecarriage is often magnificent, are generally hand-some, and have an instinctive knack of so wearingthe most commonplace garments that when seenfrom a distance these appear to be, not clothes, butOriental draperies. This peculiarity must havebeen handed down through countless generations.It is believed by some authorities that Gipsies aredescended from the Pariahs of India, a conqueredrace who were persecuted and ill-used for ages,were allowed to worship no gods, and believed innone, as none helped them. Nowadays they change their nominal religion oncrossing a frontier, being naturally anxious to avoidreligious persecution in any form, and quite in-different as to what sect—Christian or heathen—they conform to, so long as their liberty is otherwiseunrestrained. Except the musicians, no Gipsiesseem anxious to leave the lower rungs of the socialladder. Their children, like aU others, are obliged SLOVAK WOMAN SINGING A HYMN

I HUNGARIAN GIPSIES 97 by law to go to school, but parents would avoidsending them if they dared. While walking with a schoolmaster we oncecame upon three boys with violins who, under theshade of a large tree, were playing quite char-mingly. Our companion told us they were hispupils, and when asked if they learned readily,replied: Gipsy children learn nothing at all atschool; they will not learn, and do not. I cannottell if this is a general experience, but incline tothe belief that they could learn anything—if theywould. In the holidays, especially near any piece ofwater, youngsters are to be seen playing about,nearly or quite naked. Their swarthy bodiesare remarkably well formed and well nourished,their black eyes sparkle, their white teeth shine.I have a vivid recollection of one little fellow,with nothing on but a black pot-hat, who fordeda wide and rapid stream, which reached in themiddle up to his armpits, and then watched mepainting.
