We also went to Barlangliget, and visited thecurious caves there, winding for an hour or twoup and down wet wooden steps, among stalactiteformations weird in the extreme. The drippingfrom the trees outside was repeated from the rockswithin. There are grand trees at Barlangliget.The place itself consists of a group of villas sur-rounding a large restaurant in the forest. It isconsiderably higher than Tatra Lomnicz; itsseason is shorter, and it lies on the road leadingto Poland, round the eastern shoulder of the lastgreat mountain. In the rain we went down to Kesmark on amarket-day. The towns-people are of Germanorigin, but the place was then flooded with Slovakpeasants, the most picturesque we had yet seen.We anxiously inquired where they lived, only to betold Not here : they come from far away.
