Text Appearing Before Image:
fauces belong to the mouth; all behind and above the posterior orback pillars, to the nose ; and all below the tongue bone, to the larynx. The passage to the nose is between the uvula and the naso-pharyngeal wall, the mouth cavities .are bounded by the lips, teeth, palate and tongue, most of which can be seen when the lips are widelyopened, and the laryngeal section includes the pockets, the pocketligaments (sometimes called the false vocal cords), and the laryngealtube. Upon the shape, dimensions and attitude of all these functionsdepend the quality and tonal intensity of the voice. The mouth, throat, larynx, windpipe and inner surface of the noseare covered with a mucous membrane, a delicate pinky tissue, the glandsof which moisten and lubricate the various passages with which theyare connected. When these mucous membranes become inflamedor morbid, catarrh is engendered and the voice suffers both in quantityand quality. 22 VOWEL MODELS. Suggested positions of Lips, Tongue and Palate.
Text Appearing After Image:
NOTE:—These models are designed to assist the elementary student. In the later stages the attitude of the lips may be slightly modified. VOICE CULTURE. »» ♦ *^ AflUSICAL sound is produced by skilful operation upon a1V1 well-formed instrument; the more skilful the operator, thefiner the music. Good singing is created by the skilful employ-ment of certain physical organs known as the vocal apparatus. Some good performers, with exceptional taste and delicate musicalear, can get most agreeable sounds from inferior built vocal organs ;others, with greater vocal power, but possessing less delicacy of mentalconception, consider weight and volume of tone the main elements ofa singers existence, and overlook that soft liquid flexibility which onlythe cultured artistic mind can give birth to. Every normal human being has a voice; a beautiful gift of Naturewhich serves a variety of purposes, useful as well as ornamental, not theleast of which is the spontaneous depiction of human passions.
