Description

Kop van Zuid Rotterdam.

In 1620 vluchtten de Pilgrim Fathers vanuit Delfshaven naar Amerika. Daarna reisde een steeds grotere groep landverhuizers en gelukzoekers via Rotterdam naar Amerika. In 1873 werd de NASM opgericht, in 1896 officieel Holland-Amerika Lijn genoemd. Tot de eeuwwisseling van 1900 werden ongeveer een half miljoen mensen overgezet. Op 8 november 1971 voer de Nieuw Amsterdam II als laatste uit vanaf de pier, daarna verdween de H.A.L. uit Rotterdam, en uit New York.

In de periode 1901-1917 werd het directiegebouw gebouwd op de Wilhelminapier door de architecten Muller en Droogleever Fortuin en Van der Tak. Het massieve blok werd enigszins verluchtigd met jugendstilornamenten en, wat later, de twee bescheiden maar karakteristieke torentjes.
