On December 5, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite passed over the Horn of Africa and acquired a true-color image of the arid and semi-arid land.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: On December 5, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite passed over the Horn of Africa and acquired a true-color image of the arid and semi-arid land.

Ethiopia fills most of the image, with Eritrea along the Red Sea in the north, Somalia in the east along the Gulf of Aden and Djibouti at the Bab-al-Mandab Strait. The narrow Bab-al-Mandab Strait, which constricts to only 20 miles (30 km) wide, separates Djibouti from Yemen (on the Arabian Peninsula) and connects the Gulf of Aden with the Red Sea.

The green, circular lake in the Amhara Region of the Ethiopian Highlands mark Lake Tana. It is the largest lake in Ethiopia and acts as the headwaters of the Blue Nile River. The murky green color is the result of algal blooms which are fed by excessive nutrients from fertilizer from agricultural fields, from wastewater, and other sources of nutrient-rich runoff.
