On December 15, 2017, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the Horn of Africa.

Description
English: On December 15, 2017, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the Horn of Africa. The eastern-most portion of the continent of Africa, this region contains the countries of Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti.

The sunny skies and the vast expanses colored in a variety of tans and browns gives a visual confirmation of the major climatic reality – this region tends toward dry and hot, with only small area of thriving vegetation. In addition, this area has been suffering from lingering drought, which brings food insecurity and famine to a large portion of the population.
