Description

1500-1000 BC. "blackstone". Walters Art Museum (2006.15.5). Original photo by the museum at <a href="File:Native_North_American_-_Bird_Figure_-_Walters_2006155_-_Side.jpg" rel="noreferrer nofollow">commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Native_North_American_-_B...</a> Cropped and reprocessed by me. Found in southernmost Ohio at <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tremper_Mound_and_Works" rel="noreferrer nofollow">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tremper_Mound_and_Works</a>

Some archaeologists think these were used as a counterweights for an atlatl or throwing stick. This weapon, used widely throughout the Americas, served as an extension of the arm, allowing the user to hurl a short spear with greater force. The drilled holes on the underside of the bird form would have been used to attach it to the atlatl with twine.

Huh. Not obvious to me how the counter-weight would work. We need a you-tube video for that!
