Oil City. This he afterwards disposed of to the partieswho organized the Oil City Derrick. He was twice married, first to Miss Anna Cone, daughter ofAndrew Cone, who for a time represented our government at Para,Brazil. IMrs. Herpst died about January i, 1872. He afterwards mar-ried Mrs. Jennette Shaw. He died at Busti, New York, October 23, 1885, of pneumonia. The characteristics of Captain Herpst were honesty, bravery andcoolness in danger. He was loved and respected by his friends andneighbors. Pie was a good soldier and a good citizen, and died a member ofthe M. E. Church. J. H. HOLMAN. J. H. Holman was born in Philadelphia July 24, 1838, and wasthe oldest of five sons. He attended the public schools, and afterpassing examination for admission to the Philadelphia High School,it was his fathers wish that he should enter the drug business; but, ashe afterwards became interested in his fathers business, he learned thetrade of book-binding. COLOR-SERGEANT WILLIAM HARDY AND REGIMENTAL COLORS. APPENDIX. 151 1857, he made a trip around the world in the ship John Trucks. Uponthe breaking out of the war, he enHsted in the 121st Regiment, asprivate. He was transferred from the 121st Regiment to the 2d Penn-sylvania Artillery, under command of Col. Gibson. After serving inthat regiment as second lieutenant, he was advanced by promotion tothe rank of captain, and finally was breveted major. He enteredColonel Biddles 121st in 1862, Captain T. Elwood Zells company, andwas in the engagement of Snickers Gap, and from Warrenton Junc-tion down to Fredericksburg. In December, 1862, he was promotedto second lieutenant of Battery G, 2d Pennsylvania Artillery, andafterward he was first lieutenant. In 1864 he was promoted toBattery E, 2d Provisional Artillery, and participated in thebattles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor and in front ofPetersburg.
