Carrie B., twin ofClara B.. died August 13. )868. MARTIN DeFOREST HOLMES, Business Man, was born at Cambrid.ge, Ver-mont, May 27. 1851, son of Samuel and Lucy (Wallbridge) Holmes. He attended thedistrict schools of his native town and worked on the farm during his boyhood. Atthe age of nineteen years, he came to Worcester and followed farming for a numberof years: was in the employ of the Walker Ice Company for a time, in 18S4, enteredthe employ of Braman & Dow, steam fitters and plumbers, and learned the trade, andfor ten years he was employed by O. -i^i^- ■ AND ITS PEOPLE 111 cester. On April i, 1900. he started in business under the name of M. D Hohnes &Sons. The firm had a store on Main street for a year and tlien located in the presentquarters in Salem square opposite the Common. Worcester. In 1909 the businesswas incorporated under the naine of M. D. Holmes & Sons Company. Mr. Holmesand his four sons comprise the corporation. The Holmes Company carries on a gen-eral business in metal working, plumbing, ventilating and heating, and ranks amongthe most successful contractors in this line of work in Central Massachusetts, employ-ing regularly some thirty journeymen, and utilizing about 6,000 square feet of spacein the place of business. Among the recent large contracts of the company may bementioned : Seven of the buildings of the Grafton Colony of the State Hospital forthe Insane: seventeen public school houses of Worcester; the Masonic Temple; theMassachusetts State Sanitarium; Beavan Hall at Holy Cross College.
