COSMAS AND DAMIAN 233 for the new church, and Felix IV., therefore, transferred theentrance to the beautifully decorated portals of the circularvestibule situated on the Sacra Via (G). This porch, even inthe days of Constantine, was flanked with an ornamental row ofcolumns. On the entablature of the eight columns, even in thesixteenth century, traces of the inscription could be seen withConstantines name. These columns before the entrance are nolonger all preserved, but the bronze door, with its richly workedlintel, is a piece of the original work of the beginning of the fourthcentury.1 In consequence of the steady accumulation of rubbish on theForum, this entrance to the church and the antique bronze doorhad to be considerably raised by Urban VIII.; he also had thevestibule and the church divided to the roof by an inserted arch,adding a new pavement in order to acquire a correspondingheight of floor.
