At seven years of agehe rode behind a four-horse team a journey of 1050 miles fromMaine to Ohio, fifty-seven days on the way, which kept the grow-ing boys eyes open with wonder. After such schooling as hecould get in the new country he had come to, he studied medicinein Dover, O., and practiced there and in East Union several years.After his marriage, which will presently be spoken of, he movedto the neighborhood of what is now Fostoria, going from thereto Van Buren, where he lived several years, from thence settlingin Decatur, 111., and finally retured to Ohio, settling in Napoleon,where his wife died in 1875. After his wifes death, which deeplyaffected him, he went to Hutchinson, Kan., to find a happy homewith his youngest daughter, Mrs. Irene C. Bigger, in whose homehe died in 1890. He practiced medicine for fifty-five years withreal success, was frequently consulted by other physicians, wasequally attentive to poor and rich, and was most highly esteemed

DR. GLADWIN CHAFFIN FOURTH GENERATION 69 by all who knew him. He was never sick in bed during his life.Just before his death he had been eating and rose to walk towardsthe door when, beginning to fall, his daughter, Amanda, who waswith him, caught him in her arms and he was laid upon a lounge,where he breathed his last immediately. In religious faith hewas a Presbyterian. A few interesting reminiscences are here presented. They weregiven to the writer of this Chaffin history by his granddaughter,his dear wifes namesake, Diadamia Bigger Lewis, in whosemothers home he passed his last years. He was a physician ofthe old school, through and through. He compounded his ownmedicines, and my sister and I used to watch him weigh out hisDovers powders and quinine on his tiny brass scales. He wasfamous locally for two or three remedies of his own compounding.One was his green salve and another was his liniment. He hadmuch mechanical skill and could turn his hand to any sort ofwork.
