He was elected for a second term, and by thistime his friends recognized in him a party man of great strength and a candidatewhom the Democrats had reason to fear. He was therefore brought forwardas a candidate for Mayor, was nominated and elected, and so great was hispopularity, success and strength with the people that he was retained in thesame office for a period of five terms. For the past twenty years he has beena member of the School Board almost continuously, and has done a vast amountfor the cause of education. He has been president of the Oil City BuildingAssociation for the past ten years, and was one of the earliest and strongestpromoters of such organizations in their infancy. He is identified with manyof the secret societies and lodges of his home city, among them being Masons,.Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and Modern Woodmen. He accepted in the interestof his party, made a brilliant campaign, and reduced the majority of his oppo-nent to less than half its normal size. A little later he was selected as StateCommitteeman from the Eighteenth Congressional District, which position hehas occupied for the last four years. In 1897 he was appointed as a memberof the Board of Trustees for the Asylum for the Incurable Insane, then in courseof erection at Peoria. Later Governor Tanner appointed him to a position onthe State Board of Health, which he still occupies. Personally he is extremelypopular with the masses of people, owing to his affability, integrity and brilliantqualities of mind. He has a remarkable faculty for making and retaining friends.He has been twice urged to run for Congress, and no doubt could easily havebeen elected, but has preferred to practice his profession. E.
