voted for the nomina-tion of James G. Blaine for President. Gen. Martin was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic from its or-ganization and was elected Department Commander of the Department of Illi-nois at the State encampment held at Springfield in 1889, served the full termof the office, and relieved by the election of his successor at the State encamp-ment held at Quincy, in 1890. Gen. Martin was married in 1852 to Jane Elston, of Salem, 111. To themfour children were born, three of whom are now living. Mrs. Martin died in1889. He was again married in 1893 to Margaret Savage, of Ashland, Ky.One child has been born to them. His children reside at and near his home inSalem, 111. General Martin has a warm social side, and makes friends wherever he eoes.In September, 1882, he and others organized the Southern Illinois Soldiersand Sailors Reunion Association, and he was elected commander, and has beensuccessively elected commander ever since. His early ed-ucation was extremely limited, as he was compelled to work in a cotton factoryfrom his earliest childhood. His ancestors were distinguished soldiers and sail-ors in the British service under Wellington and Nelson. At the age of sixteenhe was apprenticed to a carpenter and builder in Philadelphia, and upon at-taining his majority worked at Cape May. Keyport. X. Y., and Xew YorkCity. In 1854 he came to Chicago and began working at his trade as carpenterand builder.
