He was one of the original members of theCommittee on Monument, and, as a member of theCommission, has been an earnest, active, reliableworker. GENERAL JAMES BARNETT. The people of Ohio need no introduction to GeneralJames Barnett. As a Soldier, a business man, and aphilanthropist he has ever occupied the front rank ofcitizens, and he is one of the rare men whose achieve-ments and honors fail to arouse jealousy in some quar-ters. General Barnett has been a member of the Monu-ment Commission since June 20, 1884. He bears thedistinction of having commanded the first artilleryopened on the Union side in the great Civil War. Fortwenty years previous to the beginning of the War, hewas a member of an independent artillery companyknown as the Cleveland Light Artillery. When themenaces of the rebels began to take on a serious ap-pearance, the battery offered its services to the Govern-ment. Five days after the fall of Fort
