The portrait by Reynolds of Bennet Langton(about whom Johnson said, who will go toheaven if Langton does not?) was lent to theSouth Kensington Exhibition of 1868 by Mr. J.H. H oil way. Reynoldss portrait of Gibbon in a scarlet coatand waistcoat, which belongs to the Earl of Shef-field, was said, by Malone, to be as like the originalas it is possible to be, and yet there are those whoprefer Romneys portrait which was painted forHayley before Gibbon left England for Lausanne.This was lent to the South Kensington Exhibitionof 1867 by Mr. Henry Willett. At the National Gallery is an admirable portraitof Boswell by Reynolds, which was painted for thesitter under conditions explained in the followingletter, written in 1785 by Boswell, which was foundamong Reynoldss papers, endorsed with his sig-nature and the words, I agree to the above con-ditions :
