Major Thomas F. Elmitt, D.S.O. MAJOR THOMAS F. ELMITT, D.S.O. In pre-war days an officer of the 43rd Regiment, ofOttawa, and at the outbreak of war was engaged in thelumber business in that city. Major Elmitt enhsted with the Battahon in November,1914, as a Captain. He was appointed to commandD Company, and promoted to the rank of MajorDecember 31st, 1915. When the late Colonel Elmer W. Jones assumed com-mand of the Battalion, he was appointed Second-in-Command. He commanded the Battalion, with theacting rank of Lieut.-Colonel, during the period ColonelJones was in England owing to wounds received in theattack on Vimy Ridge in April, 1917. In October, 1917, Major Elmitt was appointed to acommand in England. This officer, whose enviable record with the 21st isso well known to all who have served with it, will alv/aysstand as one of the prominent figures in the history ofthe Battalion. 13

Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Edward Pense,D.S.O.. M.C. LIEUT.-COLONEL HENRY EDWARD PENSE,D.S.O., M.C. For some years before the war Lieut.-Colonel Pensewas associated with Brigadier-General W. St. P. Hughesin the 14th Regiment (Princess of Waless Own Rifles),of Kingston, Ontario. On the mobilization of the 21stCanadian Battalion he was taken on the strength as aLieutenant, and posted as a Platoon Commander in A Company. On the 5th of February, 19 £.5, he was promotedto the rank of Captain, and assumed the duties of Second-in-Command of C Company, which post he held untilappointed to command A Company in the fightingat the St. Eloi craters in April, 1916. He was appointedan Acting-Major on July ist, 1916, and was wounded onSeptember 15th, 1916, when the Battalion captured theSugar Factory, near Courcelette, on the Somme. Re-joining the Battalion in February, 1917, he was promotedto the temporary rank of Major, from the i8th of January,1917, and appointed Adjutant on the 23th of Februaryof
