d of what it actually was at that time, to know that at theintersection of Main and Fifth streets, now the centre of business and tastefulimprovement, there Avas a pond of water, full of alder bushes, from which thefrogs serenaded the neighborhood during the summer and fall, and which renderedit necessary to construct a causeway of logs to pass it. That morass remained inits natural state, with its alders and its frogs, several years after Mr. B. became aresident of the place, the population of which, including the garrison and fol-lowers of the army, was about six hundred. The fort was then commanded byWilliam H. Harrison, a captain in the army, but afterwards President of theUnited States. In 1797, General Wilkinson, the commander-in-chief of thearmy, made it his head-quarters for a few months, but did not apparently interferewith the command of Captain Harrison, which continued till his resignation in1798. In thefollowing spring it was taken down and the materials used for the construction of several dwellings inthe western part of Cincinnati then called Texas, The greater proportion of the timber was found tobe perfectly sound. The site was on Vine street just above where now is the Arcade. In 1791 a num-ber of the inhabitants formed themselves into a company to escort the Rev. James Kemper frombeyond the Kentucky river to Cincinnati; and, after his arrival, a subscription was set on foot to buildthis church, which was erected in 1792.
