Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Higher Mill Chimney, Helmshore, Lancashire, on the hill opposite the Helmshore Textile Museum.

The reason it is on the hill side is that in steep sided valleys the air flow can be very peculiar and the solution was to get the top of the chimney high enough to be in clean flowing air.

It was cheaper to build a long flue under the road and up the hill side to a short chimney rather than build a tall stack in the valley bottom.
