Lower Herring Lake at 3 feet above average meets rushing inflow from Herring Creek.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Lower Herring Lake has an outlet into Lake Michigan, to the southwest, and is fed by Herring Creek from the northeast. The outlet was blocked by sand. The waves, whipped by winds off Lake Michigan from the west, pushed into the mouth of Herring Creek. The near bank of the creek was defoliated by a new owner who smothered the beach grasses, pulled out stumps and cut down trees that held the creek bank, and dumped in sand so his short term renters could have a sandy beach. The storms and flooding dislodged a nearby dock which floated to the creek mouth. With the dislodged sapling trunks that once decorated the creek bank, and the false beach sand that washed into the creek mouth, blockage dammed up the creek by the property and it flooded the grounds. Only a false mound created by buried septic system holding tanks kept the water from running right across the road.
