Transcribed from photograph: "Portraits. Spalding, Henry Harmon, 1804-1874." Spalding and his wife, Eliza, were Presbyterian missionaries who joined Marcus and Narcissa Whitman on the Oregon Trail.; This drawing was created several years after Spalding's death. The copy photograph was used by Erle Howell for his book "Methodism in the Northwest" which was published in 1968. Original artist unknown. Date approximated.
