Title
Head of a figurative mount from a medievalLimoges style casket or similar
Description
English: Part of a cast copper-alloy figurative mount, probably depicting a saint. The mount would have been attached to a Limoges crucifix, casket or chasse. The preserved fragment comprises a stylised head and the upper part of the torso. The body of the figure is convex, and retains traces of decoration that may relate to the rendering of clothing. The neck is short and narrow, and the head sub-oval in profile, with a flat top. Facial detail is rudimentary, consisting simply of two small eyes (probably metal pins); any further features are now lost. Height 27.9mm; greatest width (at shoulders) 14.7mm Thickness of body = 5.2mm, thickness of head = 7.6mm. Similar, more complete examples can be seen on the Portable Antiquities database: LIN 9833AO / BH-CED505. For books see B.Read, Metal Artefacts of Antiquity, Vol 1, 2001, pp.18. Also London Museum, Medieval Catalogue, 1967 (2nd ed), pp.288.
