the town and bring backa prisoner. Rushing into the town at double quick,Adams spotted a German soldier and chased himinto a little stone house. The Boche fastened thedoor in Adams face. Sergeant Adams had but twoshots left in his automatic. He fired them boththrough the door and ordered the Boche to surrender.The Boche came—and after him one LieutenantColonel, eighteen Staff Officers and three hundredand fifty-five soldiers—a total of three hundred andseventy-five. For this he received the Croix deGuerre and later the Distinguished Service Cross.It is reported that when Sergeant Adams turnedover his prisoners to his Battalion Headquarters theinstincts of a filing clerk caused him to insist upon awritten receipt for his three hundred and seventy-five. Sergeant Adams citation for the Distinguished Serv-ice Cross mentioned the number of his prisoners asapproximately three hundred while the specificstatement as above was given in connection with hisaward of the Croix de Guerre. When the Infantry, of which this youngster was apart, was held up by a trench occupied by Germans,he voluntarily ran around the end of the trench, likea football player, to its rear, facing the Americanfire. He fired into the trench, killing at least one ofthe enemy and frightening the Germans into the be-lief that they were surrounded. They surrenderedin a panic, and were taken prisoners by PrivateCameron.Distinguished Service Cross. (93) ,V>*«
