The dusky court was immediately assembledto receive the illustrious captive in proper state.The people gathered around him with awe andveneration as he was conducted to the bough-built palace of Powhatan. He was about sixty years of age, of noble andcommanding stature, majestic mien, and, asSmith himself asserted, he was in manner andaspect every inch a king. He was clothedin a rich robe made of raccoon-skins, his headwas highly ornamented with feathers, and hisface was painted with red and blue colors. Heentered with haughty step, ascended a platformand sat down upon a rude throne, with a daugh-ter upon each side of him as supporters. Thesewere beautiful Indian girls, aged respectivelyabout thirteen and fifteen years. Along each side of the room were rows of counselors, behindwdiora were equal rows of women ; and all, ofboth sexes, were fantastically painted and orna-mented. The prisoner was brought in, and was receivedwith a shout. The daughter of a cliief broughtwater for him to wash his hands, and a bunchof feathers to dry them.
