| Description |
Interstate 70 east of Glenwood Springs, Colorado traverses a deep and steep canyon, known as Glenwood Canyon. The highway is a marvel of construction, cantilevered in places out over the Colorado River. There is an exit at mile 125 for Hanging Lake. The trail to the lake is short but steep, 1,020 feet of elevation change over 1.2 miles. Still, there were many hikers taking the challenge one day last week. I had to stop several times to catch my breath. Near the end of the climb, the last 100 feet, steps are carved into the rock. At the top this little pond sits in serene repose, as if waiting for the daily influx of red-faced climbers. The source of the water, Spouting Rock, is another hundred feet up.
