(Plate 235.) In those utensils of which it may be said that as a rule theyare artistically decorated beyond what is wanted for practical purposes,we may reckon the Hand-bell. During the Middle Ages and theRenascence: the Hand-bell seems to have been chiefiy used in anofficial capacity in Council-chambers and for ecclesiastical purposes;and its introduction into ordinary households, to summon the atten-dants did not take place till later. In our own times, so prolific ofParliamentary and other Meetings: the Hand-bell is indispensable. Thenecessary parts are: the resonant Cup, the Clapper suspended in thf»- METAL OBJECTS. 405

The Scissors, Plate 234. 40G The Hand-Bell. interior of the cup, and the Handle. The two former are always otmetal; the cup of an alloy, or sometimes of silver; and the clapperof iron. The handle may be of the same material as the cup, or itmay be made of wood, ivory, &c. The form of the cup is generallythe same as that of the large Chui-ch-bells, which is based on practicalexperience (figs. 2, 3). Forms like figs. 1, 5 and 6, are rarer.Hand-bells for domestic use are small (about 4 ins. high); those forofficial purposes are larger (up to 12 ins). The latter class oftenhave a non-essential adjunct in the shape of a Pedestal (figs. 7 and 8).The handle takes the form of a long extended knob (figs. 2, 3, 7, 8),or of a hoop (figs. 1 and 6). The decoration extends to the handleand the cup of the bell, which is frequently adorned with heraldicbearings, and zones of inscriptions. Sometimes we find Hand-bells inthe form of ladies, in which case the wide skirt of the dress is thecup (fig.
