Description
English: AWM caption : Egypt. C. 1943-06. Seven men, the crew of an RAF Halifax bomber, on leave in Cairo, recovering. Their bomber was one of a formation attacking a target in Italy one night in 1943-05. During the flight all the engines failed, the captain brought the aircraft down on the rough sea and the seven men took to their rubber dinghy in which they spent eleven days before being washed ashore on the North African coast. The only Australian in the crew was 16655 Sergeant C. D. Curnow of SA, and on 1943-07-06 it was announced that he had been awarded the DFM for the fortitude and high morale displayed during this trying period. The captain and two other members of the crew were also decorated.
