Summary[edit]

Description The Halesowen Abbey Scroll, a manuscript of Magna Carta with illuminated capitals on three membranes of joined parchment. It is believed to have been produced by the monks of Halesowen Abbey, Halesowen, Shropshire (now West Midlands), England, after 1225. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538, the Abbey's property was acquired by the Lyttelton family. The scroll eventually came into the possession of Charles Lyttelton (1714–1768), who served as President of the Society of Antiquaries of London from 1765 till his death. He left the scroll to the Society in his will. The manuscript was on display in an exhibition at the Society entitled Magna Carta through the Ages, commemorating the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta.
