Summary[edit]

Description

Picture: Tanya Holden/DFID

HRH Prince of Wales and International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt walk through Pichelin Village, Dominica, to see the destruction caused by Hurricane Maria. UK aid has provided essential relief to the village, with two distributions (by helicopter) of tarpaulins, food rations and baby clothes. There have been subsequent distributions of UK aid through the Catholic Relief Service (CARITAS) providing tarpaulins and hygiene sets, aiming to support around 200 families.

DFID has been supporting similar emergency relief through the International Federation of the Red Cross and the International Organisation for Migration. Work is now transitioning from immediate relief to reconstruction. DFID will be supporting the re-roofing of between 1,500 and 2,000 homes and providing cash disbursements to 1,000 of the most affected families.

The village of Pichelin lies on the Loubiere to Bagatelle Road. Hurricane Maria caused extensive damage, with high winds resulting in many of the houses losing their roofs, and the intense rainfall flooding the entire village, destroying houses and cars.

In addition, last year the UK allocated £25m for a climate resilient road between Loubiere and Bagatelle. This would have better flood drainage so the road would not be destroyed in a hurricane and would be built to withstand a natural disaster.
