| Description |
Fridtjof Nansen class Frigate in Royal Norwegian Navy service Built by Navantia in Spain, launched on 11 February 2009 and commissioned on 18th January 2011. The fifth and final ship of her class, she is a multi-role frigate with a displacement of 5,290 tons and is powered by a combination of diesel and gas turbines. She has a compliment of 120 crew and differs from the others in her class by being built with two 8-cell VLS (Vertical Launching System) modules instead of just one. She is named after Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl (1914-2002) who sailed 5,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean in a hand-built raft to demonstrate that long sea voyages could have been made by ancient cultures. With this in mind, it is perhaps notable that ‘F314’ has a range of ‘only’ 4,500 miles. She is seen at rest in Bodø Harbour, Northern Norway. 24th May 2019 |
