English: The Royal Navy frigate HMS Montrose (F236), left, and the German frigate Lübeck (F214), steam in formation with the U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Ross (DDG-71) and the French minesweeper Andromède (M643), both not pictured, in the North Channel between Ireland and Great Britain on 4 May 2018. The formation was part of a ceremony held to honour the U.S. troop ship SS Tuscania, which was sunk during World War I by the German submarine UB-77 in the North Channel on 5 February 1918 and the Royal Navy troop ship HMS Otranto, which collided with the troop ship HMS Kashmir during a severe storm and sank in Machir Bay on 6 October 1918. The four ships sailed past a monument erected by the American Red Cross on the Mull of Oa in 1920 in memory of the American seaman lost on the Tuscania. |
