Description |
English: HMS 'Indefatigable' exploding at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916 Inscribed by the artist 'Indefatigable' , lower left. At the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916 the 'Indefatigable' was hit by successive salvos of 11-inch shells from the German battle-cruiser 'Von der Tann' at 16.02-16.03 and blew up with the loss of 1017 officers and men. There were only two survivors. Whether this atmospheric drawing is based on eyewitness accounts or a photograph remains to be determined. [B |
