Deutsch: Karl Gustav wurde am 19. Juli 1892 geboren. Ostern 1911 verließ er das Katharineum als Erster aller um an den Universitäten Genf, Freiburg und Göttingen die Rechte zu studieren. Am 4. Juli 1914 bestand er in Celle die Referendarprüfung. Als er dann auf einer Reise bei seinem damals in München studierendem Bruder war, ergriff ihn und der Bruder der Sturm der Begeisterung beim Kriegsausbruch: beide traten als Kriegsfreiwillige bei dem 7. Chevaulinger-Regiment in Straubing ein. Am 2. Dezember brach er von dort ins Feld auf. Im Frühjahr 1915 gewann er die Überzeugung, seinem Vaterland bei der Infanterie besser dienen zu können, und trat zum 21. Bayerischen Infanterie-Regiment über. Schon im Sommer 1915 wurde er zu einer Expedition in die Türkei kommandiert, mit der er bis nach dem nördlichen Persien gelangte und in der er als Eskadronsführer wieder Reiterdienst zu tun hatte; unter anderem lag es ihm ob, kurdische Reiter nach deutschen Kavallerie-Vorschriften einzuexerzieren. Bei diesen gelang er zu einer eigenartigen Verehrung. Im Orient blieb er bis in den Oktober 1916, schließlich an Malaria schwer krank. Erst im Juli 1917 konnte er wieder ins Feld rücken. Von Schülerzeiten her künstlerisch, namentlich literarisch begabt und stark interessiert, hatte er mehr und mehr seine soldatischen Pflichten zur Hauptsache seines Denkens und Handelns werden lassen.
Am 20. August 1917 übernahm er nach schweren Gefechten die 2. Kompanie und führte sie 10 Monate. Die Kompanie wurde erst wieder in der Frühjahrsoffensive 1918, wo er das EK I erhielt, eingesetzt. Im Morgengrauen den 20. Juni 1918 war ein Angriff von untergeordneter Bedeutung fast völlig abgeschlagen, stieß er an der Spitze einer kleinen Patrouille auf bisher verborgen gebliebene Engländer. Eine Handgranate traf ihn tödlich. |
