Summary

[edit]
Description

"The H-19 was one in a series of military helicopters produced by Sikorsky, this one as a larger utility format transport." The large piston radial engine mounted in the nose left the main cabin below the flight deck open for as many as 10 passengers. The large starboard side doorway facilitated loading and unloading of troops, cargo, or as many as six stretchers. The "Chickasaw" was the first medium cargo helicopter in the Army inventory and saw extensive use during the Korean Conflict in a variety of missions - troop transport, cargo/supply missions, and medical evacuation. The H-19 was still actively used during the early years of the Vietnam Conflict by both U.S. and ARVN forces."
