Here is the old GothicPalazzo della Ragione (1228-33).The new and well-built Via Danteleads from it N.W. to a good eques-trian statue of Garibaldi. Oppositeis the entrance to the imposingCastello, long used as barracks,but now restored to its originalaspect as the stronghold of theSforza and Visconti. One of itsgreat towers has been thoroughlyrenewed and turned to account asa reservoir for water, which ispumped from artesian wells, 300metres deep, sunk near the Arena(amphitheatre). These supply withgood water all the public fountainsand many quarters of the town.The splendid gate tower of Filaretehas been recently restored by L.Beltrami, who is responsible forseveral of the best modern buildingsin Milan.
